How does a person register for classes for preparation for the GED?

The GED Testing Center only administers the examination and the practice examination. Should you wish to enroll in an instructional or preparatory program a service called the Literacy Hotline and be reached by telephone. The number for the Hotline is (202)727-2431.  A counselor at that telephone number will assist you in finding an appropriate preparatory program. After surveying the programs you may  the register at the one of your choice.

Does a person have to take the classes in order to take the test, or can one just take the exam?

One can take the exam without attending classes. However, one first MUST take and pass the "2002 edition of the Official GED Practice Test." It is offered free of charge the first and third Friday week of every month at 410-8th Street NW. Please check the web site calendar for specific dates. One must pre-register at the GED Testing Center at 410-8th Street NW between 9 am and 1 pm M-F.

Taking the GED Practice Test will be a big help to the test candidate in showing areas where improvement may be needed. If there are such, then taking the classes will increase the chance of passing the exam.

 

What is the value of District of Columbia GED testing?

Successfully passing the GED exam enables individuals to earn a high school credential which may qualify one to pursue higher education, obtain a job or job promotion, realize a raise in pay, and achieve a sense of personal fulfillment.

 

Can you email me my Exam Results?

This matter is being investigated. The test results will be sent to you through US Postal Service. Should you not receive your test results by August 1, 2006, please call the GED Testing Center at (202)274-7173. Test results may not be sent by email at this time.
Is receiving a GED from the District of Columbia the same as receiving one from any other place?? Do you have to live in the District to take it?
One must be a bonafide resident of the District of Columbia to sit for the examination in the District of Columbia except for a few special exceptions which are reviewed on a case by case basis.  The results of the GED are accepted by 95% of employers and schools of higher education; however, some states have higher requirements for successfully passing the GED test.

 

How long are "partially passed GED test scores VALID"? Someone told me that if you don't retake the test within one year, your test scores for the areas you passed are "INVALID"?

 

All test scores earned on/or after 2002 on the Official GED test are considered in determining qualfying passing scores. These scores will be valid until the next edition of the GED is issued {2011}. Scores earned on examinations prior to 2002 will not be considered in determining qualifying passing scores. Any scores earned since 2002 will be considered until 2011 edition testing begins.  PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL TEST SCORES FOR THE 2002 EDITION OF THE GED WILL EXPIRE AND NOT BE VALID AFTER DECEMBER 31, 2010.  IF ONE NEEDS TO RETEST IN ANY SUBJECT, THEN ONE MUST SCHEDULE, TEST AND COMPLETE THE PROCESS BEFORE DECEMBER 31. 2010.

 

 How long does it take to get your test scores?

You should receive your test scores by United States Postal Service at the address you entered on your examination answer sheet within fifteen to twenty business days (thirty calendar days) from the day you completed the examination.

 

Is there any way to check scores online?

How long must a candidate wait before retesting? Are there some occasions when the 90 day does not apply?

GED POLICY 06 Early Re-Testing Policy
1. Early Testing: The OSSE-GED Testing Center maintains a three month waiting period between test administrations and only in cases of extreme hardship will applicants be allowed to test within this three month period....All appeals to the GED Administrator must include written documentation on company letterhead that verfies the request. No applicant is permitted to test more than three times in a calendar year.
2. Applicants that wish to appeal for retesting must submit the Application to Request Early Retesting to the GED Testing Center for review, consideration, and disposition.

 

I took the test back in 1997, and I moved and never received my results. Is there anyway that I can find out if I passed or failed the test?

Please click the "Download Forms" selection on the home page. Download and complete a transcript request form. Mail with a money order for the appropriate amount made out to "GEDTC" to the address on the form and your transcript will be researched and mailed to you. This can take from ten to twenty business days or a calendar month.

 

I took the GED in 1974 at Armstrong on 1st. O Sts, NW. I need a copy of my GED certificate. How can I obtain one and/or what process must I follow. Thank You

 

To download an application for the GED Transcript Request: click, "DOWNLOAD FORMS on the DCGED.org Home Page; select the "transcript(s)" link; print out the form; fill out the required information and send it to the address printed on the form with a money order made out to GEDTC for the appropriate amount; and, you will receive your order by return US Postal Service usually within twenty business days of the Testing Center's receipt of your request.  PLEASE NOTE:  Duplicate certificates are NOT issued for security and authenticity control.

 

Do I have to take the practice GED first?
Yes, you must sit for the 2002 Edition of the Official GED Practice Test.

 

How often do you offer the practice test at UDC?

The GED Practice Test is currently being offered twice a month at the GED Testing Center. See the GED events calendar for specific dates. Upon completion of a trial, on site computer directed 2002 edition of the GED Practice Test may be available on a scheduled appointment basis.

 

DO YOU NEED TO FILL OUT THE FORM THAT IS ON LINE FOR THE PRACTICE TEST IN ORDER TO BE SCHEDULED TO TAKE IT OR IS IT BEST TO COME TO UDC TO REGISTER FOR THE PRACTICE TEST IN PERSON AND GET THE DATE AND TIME FOR THE TEST. OR FIRST COME FIRST SERVE ON PRACTICE DATES ON THE ONLINE CALENDER IF SO I SEE THAT AUG 11TH IS THE NEXT PRACTICE TEST DATE SHOULD MY SON BE THERE BEFORE 8:30 TO BE ONE OF THE 20 PEOPLE TO TRY TO TAKE THE PRACTICE TEST AND WILL THE SCORES BE MAILED TO US. WITH A GED DATE TO TAKE THE REAL EXAM.

The candidate must come in and fill out the "Application for the Practice Test". The online application is under construction and is not operational. Please be sure that candidate is 18 years or older.

Who writes the test questions?
Test questions for each of the five subject areas are written by high school teachers. Every question undergoes multiple reviews by test specialists using a national stratified random sample of graduating high school seniors, tested in the spring of their senior year. These seniors establish the performance standard required for candidates to earn the GED credential. Equating studies ensure comparability across the forms of the GED Tests.

 

If I pass 4 of the 5 part test how long before I retake the part I failed.

Can I take the GED in French in Washington, DC?
Yes, you may take the French Version of the GED in the District of Columbia by registering at the GED Testing Center at 410-8th Street, NW; Suite 601. Should you be successful in passing this examination set, you will receive a certificate indicating your general education proficiency was demonstrated on the French Version of the GED.

 

How does material covered on the tests compare with what is required for a high school diploma in the District of Columbia?

Each of the five tests in the GED Tests battery is developed from specifications established by experienced secondary school teachers using their respective state curriculum standards and the standards established from such national organizations as the National Teachers of Mathematics, National Council for the Social Studies, National Council of Teachers of English, and the National Science Teachers Association. This is a nationally congealed examination an meets the District of Columbia's high school curriculum offering in each of the areas tested by the GED.
